Cat Converters
Audians,
For those of you with I-5 cyl. 4000CS/5000. A special note for those of you
having been told you need a new catalytic converter. This may have been
diagnosed from the pebble-in-the-can sound eminating from near the cat. I just
learned a few things that I'd like to share:
1) Check the heat shield surrounding the cat first. In my case, this cover had
come loose (perhaps from a bit of logging-road rallying, or driving through snow
drifts). In this case, any decent shop can re-cinch the cover onto the cat
unit, or rig up a clamp around the unit near the flange to stop the rattle.
2) If in fact you do need a new catalytic converter, don't buy the line (you
will inevitably be told by some schyseter mechanic) that you need an Audi cat.
These cost $700-800. There are a couple of aftermarket cats that will work in
the $100 range.
3) If you are in the Portland, OR area, avoid the shop called "Esquire Motors",
run by an arrogant chump who will try to shaft you numerous ways to thin your
wallet.
4) A great place for used Audi parts is called "Halsey Imports" (503) 256-0181.
Even better is the place next door that can do repairs honestly and cheaply if
you can't (or don't have the time). Same number, mechanic named "Mike" is THE
MAN.
Hope this info saves you as much dead presidents as it did me. Every penny
counts towards my new purchase.....the elusive Lago Blue '91 200Q 20V.
