Transverse links: Replacing?
OK, so who knows what a transverse link is? For those who don't, I think it's
a part specific to Quattro's (or at least cars with an independent rear
suspension.) It is what I call the rear tie rod, attaches to the top of the
rear wheel bearing housing, about 7 inches long. While I had my rear shox out,
I decided to move the bearing housing up & down, like going over bumps. Well,
a loud clunk emerges about half way thru the travel, and if I look at the outer
portion of the Transverse Link, I can see the thing move about a quarter inch.
Same symptoms on both sides of the car. I can't imagine this is normal, so
Linda will be getting a call as soon as the West Coast wakes up. Question is,
who wants to buy a completely disassembled TQ? Sorry. Real question is, the
Bentley shows two transverse links, the old style & the new style. Doesn't say
if the two are interchangeable, I guess they are, and I've got the old style.
Any problem with installing the updated style Transverse Link if the rest of
the stuff back there is old style (it seems they redid the rear suspension on
the Q's about halfway thru the '87 model year, after a major change during the
'86 - '87 model designation.) TIA-
