80/90 Steering Col. Switches
I'm happy to report I now have a working rear wiper/washer on my CQ! I
replaced the steering column switch unit and confirmed that the old one
was indeed a sedan model. I can't believe that everything went smoothly
and I didn't break anything. If I just look at my 4ks wrong I can hear a
plastic tab break or a screw fall under the seat, never to be seen again.
(At least I can pull the instrument cluster off of the dash without any tools
now, even while driving!) I guess the donation I put in the holy Audi
collection plate (Linda@Carlsen) was sufficient to spare me any wrath on
this one.
As a consequence, I now have a set of steering col. switches for an 80/90
sedan, m.y. '88 through (early?) '90. It will not fit cars w/driver's airbag,
nor does it have the computer controls (mine are in the dash). It looks as
good as the new one I put in and everything works. The controls include:
Left side - headlights, turn signals, cruise control
Right side - hazard lights, (front) wiper/washer controls
I'll let it go for half of what I paid for the new one. I'm ashamed to admit
how much I paid for the small convenience of a rear wiper, but the fact that
the installation went well will give you an idea. Little things like this bother
me when they don't work. "Then why do you own an Audi?!?!" you ask?
Because it keeps countless microbreweries, uh - liquid mechanic
manufacturers, in business.
Next project: missing headlight washer. I'm scared to see the price on this
one. I believe that Vince Jones is doing this on his 100CSQ. Don't be too
concerned about the lack of a Bentley, Vince. Mine mentions nothing
about the headlight washers (unless it's in that mysterious chapter 25 that
comes after ch.27 but before ch.18, only on Tuesdays and Thursdays
after the summer solstice). I would appreciate any advice if you get yours
installed. O.K., I have to know - what level of sacrifice do the gods
require?
BTW, thanks for all the help with the roof rack. When I went back to the
shop that sells Thule, the guy said that they do have the feet that fit the
Coupe's roofline holes! Seems that the last guy just looked at my car and
assumed it needed the stretch kit.
All of this good fortune doesn't bode well for my trip to Indiana this
weekend. As a precaution I washed, polished, and waxed both Audis.
