Subject: 90Q Question.

Something really strange is happening to my sisters 89 90Q. There is a
really loud 'chirp' coming from the front of the engine.....that we cant
seem to isolate.

I removed the accessory belts, and it is still there, so that rules out
PS/alternator/AC. We replaced the timing belt, water pump and idler
bearing. STill there. I did notice however that timing belt tension
affects the sound. Does this sound familiar to anyone? What else can it
be? Oil pump?? (That CANT be easy to replace...is it??) Main bearing??!?!
It sounds like its from the front center...not like the cam or anything.

Other than that, the car runs flawlessly.
Any input appreciated...

Bob

Thanks to everyone who responded. I called and the car just turned 100k,
that's why they're selling. New timing belt, tires, seems well-maintained.
Guy bought it from his company, was company car so may have been abused but
was dealer-maintained. Only negative so far is color: fire-engine red on
black leather, just about my last color choice for stealthy cruising. Will
test-drive on Fri and report back in case I pass and anyone else is
interested. Is it just me or do the later 100/A6 wagons seem smaller than
the
5k/200 TQW?

The spoiler on my silver '84 4KQ is painted black. It is also
fissured and cracked and generally looks terrible close up. The paint
seems to be some kind of rubberized product, but so far I haven't
undertaken to paint it. I'm afraid that using any kind of chemical to
strip the paint might damage the rubber as well. I've unfortunately lost
touch with my friend who was a body man in NJ, so I'm in the dark too.
Why did Audi paint it? I have seen later Coupe GTs with the unpainted,
hard-foam rubber spoilers that resemble anti-skid floor-mat material,
and look great after many years of service.

Subject: Re: Play in differential ?

Hi Vikram,

My 1988 80 (116 K miles) 5sp/man. has the same problem, to a lesser degree.
I suspect the engine mounts, as the play can be felt -and seen- in the gear
lever, the whole lever moving forward whenever the clutch comes in. I also
notice this when I release the accelerator in fourth or fifth gear. The
engine mounts are known to be a weak point, as they're soft to start with.
The whole thing doesn't feel like transmission play to me. The trans makes
no noise whatsoever, shifting smoothly and crisply. The only sign of wear
so far is a very slight noise when upshifting from 2nd to 3rd with a cold
'box. Still the best 5-speed manual 'box in any car I've driven, EVER.

regards, Tom

- ------------------------------------------
I had posted a message some time ago regarding some kind of play or
looseness in the manual tranny of my 1988 Audi 80. Whenever I shift
gears and release the clutch there is some play and then the tranny
engages with a jerk and thunk. Possible maladies suggested were:

     1. Worn tranny bushing (old one checked out as ok, replaced
     nevertheless)

     2. Worn engine mounts (checked out ok, replaced anyway)

     3. Worn bushings (seem to look ok)

Yesterday, I jacked up the car and with it in 1st gear, tried to
rotate each wheel. Both wheels rotate about 15 degrees and I can
a springy noise. They do not rotate at the inner or outer CV's
but in the tranny - however I thought this was normal, not sure
     though.

     Ideas/suggestions ????

     Best Regards,
     Vikram.

Maybe to find the windshield leak you can close all the windows and crank
up the A/C to maximum, pressurizing the interior slightly (assuming
everything else seals well) and use some bubble-liquid around the
windshield edge to find the leak a-la the old fix-a-flat method. I don't
know if the blower fan can actually pressurize the interior to any
appreciable degree, but maybe it's worth a shot.

Also, on the subject of pressure, I'm no turbo expert, but I thought that
a turbo engine will always devlop the same amount of max boost regardless
of elevation (within reason, of course), it will just take longer for the
turbo to develop pressure because of the lower air density and that's why
small turbos work relatively better at high elevations?

Best wishes,
Alex

Subject: Re: Tires

Resonding to 3 different messages regarding tires:

     >>9) Colorado list members-- what's the best tire choice for all
     >>season mountain driving? Do I need snow tires for winter, or can I
     >>get by with a good set of all season radials?

I only drive on New England snow, but I highly recommend snow tires.
Nothing works better in snow than snow tires. I think they might
actually be designed to work best in snow, and are called "snow tires"
because of that fact. :-). All-season tires are a compromise. The
times I've been skiing in Colorado, there were big signs in the
mountains saying chains were required, but was told that true snow
tires were also allowed. Unless you plan on using chains, use snow
tires. This will also allow you to have better summer tires than
all-seasons, which again are a compromise. The numerous [sorry. can't
think of a polite term for morons] who think you don't need snow tires
sure were hazards last winter every time it snowed, which it did more
or less continuously. Snow tires are *more* important than having
4-wheel drive. A quattro with snow tires is snow-driving heaven.

     >>So this winter I thought of buying some steel wheels and going with
     >>a little skiny tire with more tread in it

I recall that there was a "cold weather" package for my 84 4000Q that
included smaller all-season tires. However, the local tire dealer
recommended snow tires that were the same size as my summer tires
(195/60). I have never had a problem. The car goes so well in the
snow that the danger is over-driving your stopping ability. I use the
center differential lock when driving in snow, per the owner's manual
suggestion. The advantage is that you have your normal size tires
     when the roads clear.

     >>One question. Has anyone put new tires on yet? I am planning on

     >>anyone heard differently?

My understanding of tires is that a 215/50 or 225/45 would have the
same circumference as a 205/55. I just put D40M2's on my V8 (bought
last March). They seem OK. (New shocks made a much bigger
difference!) They'll be at Watkins Glen with the Quattro club next
week (attached to my car with me driving). I'll have a much stronger
opinion after that. Every tire shop says they are just excellent
     track tires.

Not knowing whether or not the 89 has the same type of headlight I had
on my 91, I'd say $185 is a screaming deal if they are the same. Of
course, this could be your opportunity to get Euro lights... OK, so
they're $329/side + shipping and labour if you don't put them in
yourself, but...

You can get a clear (!) adhesive plastic-like cover from Stongard in
Bellevue, WA for about $32/side. Almost invisible to the eye and doesn't
degrade lighting performance.

Subject: Track driving with an automatic

I'll be at Watkins Glen with the quattro club next week, and I'm
wondering if any of you have advice for me regarding what to do with
the automatic slushbox on my V8 while on the track. I've driven on a
track only twice before in my 4000Q, which has a manual. Somehow, an
automatic and a race track don't go together in my mind. The
automatic has an economy mode (useless on the track), a sport mode,
and a manual mode. Should I just leave it in sport mode and let it do
the shifting, or should I move the lever to force lower gears? Or
should I use the manual mode and do all the shifting? (It's a bit
slower to shift in manual mode than a real manual transmission.) It
seems to me the manual mode would only be useful to force a higher
gear, which I don't know if I'll ever need to do on the track. Any
     experienced suggestions?

He says the 30-valve V6 builds will start in October, so they will get

The 150HP 20-valve turbo 4 cylinder will be available, though it will

Your system is undercharged, not overcharged; the shop you used did not
