I think you can still buy 195/55/14 and 205/55/14. The 205s were 
installed on VW 16V GTI's right from the factory. If I'm not mistaken VW 
actually admited that the car handled better with the 185s that came on 
the 8V cars, they were just for looks! The 6 inch rim probably had alot 
to do with it. 

Your best bet might be to get some 15" wheels with 195 or 205/50s.
