Paul,
    I did not have that symptom when I started it from cold. I always
had a notchy shifter. After fixing the ball, it made it a new
car(shifting wise) I originally thought that it was just a thing with
Audi's . But after the fix I determined that it is a good shifting car,
albeit with a long throw. I thought of shortening the lever above the
pivot, but at midnight one doesn't feel like taking it apart again. I
would chek this if it is notchy though. BTW I am using Redline Synth
gear oil in the Transaxle. Which does make things smoother.

Let me know what happens.....
