Thanks for all the replies.

I should have mentioned in my original post that the first
things I checked were that the alternator belt was intact, and that the 
red ignition light came on when the key was on but no engine running 
(ie that the bulb was OK).

You have convinced me that the alternator is, in some way, dead. The only
reason I had not already decided that for myself was the absence of the 
little red light, but apparently that does not always show up with an 
alternator failure.
I have not had time to actually look at anything yet, but fixing the problem
on the net keeps your hands so much cleaner!
