Sorry for the late response...I've been hibernating.
A good dial indicator will set anyone back more than a few bucks, so I
wouldn't recommend the use (or purchase) of one to those other than
reallllly serious shadetree mechanics. To check the lobes on the number
one cylinder does not require the removal of the valve cover, just pull
the oil cap off and use a flashlight. I won't elaborate on the
appropriate position of the lobes because this is an advanced topic and
because usually (or so one would hope) the timing marks won't be out of
whack (or very far out of whack) with each other.
