CD for A6
When I saw Mr. Scharf's posting about Audi developing a kit allowing
using the 'new' 6 disk Alpine changer with earlier Bose systems
(mine is a '95 Q wagon) I decided to buy one. Having traveled
about 2000 miles on our vacation last week, it was definitely
nice to have the CD changer. Some random thoughts on the unit.
cost - My dealer charged $595 for the changer. The
itty-bitty wiring adapter (to allow using the '96 changer
with pre-96 Bose equiped cars) was Audi value priced at
$108. Installation was around $60.
I never noticed it skipping no matter how rough the road surface.
The unit sounds fine (given the limitations of the Bose system).
It sometimes seems to get confused what it is supposed to
do though. I'd position to the first CD but nothing would
happen. I could goose it into operation by cycling through the
mode (tape, radio,cd) control. I don't know if this has something do
do with my unit, or with retro fitting to older cars.
Anyone having this problem? It only happens occasionally.
I also went looking for the CD cartridges but the best
price I could find was around $25. Given that one can
buy three-packs of the new Apline cartridges for the
same money, it's a bit disappointing that I can't find
a better price on the older ones.
This brings up the point of why Audi is selling a 3-4 year old
Alpine changer.
And finally the Alpine dealer that I eventually got the CD
cartridge from said that "in a few weeks, Blitzsafe would
have an adapter box to allow connecting A4 factory radios
to a variety of Alpine CD players".
I don't know if that adapter would also work with A6s.
I just spoke with the same dealer and he called Blitzsafe
only to find that they were moving company headquarters
and had delayed the unit.
