Funny, my 86 is doing something VERY similar.  Mine will blow air thru the
dash vents on Auto, but as soon as the boost guage reads 0.8, goodbye cold
air!  I'm suspecting the vacuum check valve or perhaps a vacuum leak
somewhere in the center vent circuit.
