Re: 5k struts
The struts are a fairly straight forward procedure.Made 100% easier
with the special tools. "the right tool for the right job" You"ll
need quite an array of toos to change struts, and the bearing.
The bearing tool from Shaley is an excellant tool. However it has
several disadvantages. First, you better eat your wheeties! Its a
physical work-out of the upper body to change bearings. No lie!
To make the job a smij easier, I purchased a large box end wrench from
Sears to help in turning the main bolt on the bearing press.
I also feel (my opinion) that putting the strut assembly in a bench
mounted vise makes it a slight easier. I've changed bearings both on and
off the car. The problem compounds itself when the bearings have been a
while and rust has developed around them.
The best way to remove bearings is with a Hydraulic press. (less
physical effort) The Shaley tool comes in handy here too!
A word of advise: grease the new bearings liberally upon installation.
If you SCCA race you'll go through bearings like socks!!
