UK ur-quattro values

The following is taken from the August newsletter - it was prepared by David
Preece and Adam Marsden, but may not be wholly correct. Don't be at all
surprised if a car you examine deviates from what is said here - they're ALL
different:

=============================================================

Due to the continued demand for practical high performance
supercars, the quattro has over the past 2 - 3 years been
recognised not only as car that is still competitive with today's
technology, but a car that offers good value for money along with
a historic background. This is obviously good news for the
quattro owner, as we have seen a substantial increase in the
values of well cared for quattros during the past 18 months.

As the quattro was in production for some 11 years, there were a
number of significant changes and enhancements to the model, but
none of which took away its raw "Sex on Wheels" appearance.

How to put a value on your quattro? Well, we must first look at
the model in question, is it Left or Right Hand drive, is it a
pre TORSEN 2144 cc or TORSEN 2226 cc, is it a 10 Valve or 20
Valve model, does it have Leather Interior and Air Con. As you
would expect with the different models and options available, the
price can vary quite dramatically along with the personal
preferences and desires that the potential buyer requires

Therefore, it is difficult to value a quattro by just looking at
a photograph or by verbal description, however the one thing that
I have leamt over the past 10 years of owning quattros , is that
no matter how good a description you are given of a quattro you
must see it with your own eyes and make your own judgement. I
can imagine that there are quite a few of you who have had
similar experiences as 1, when viewing so called immaculate
quattros .....

So what I have done is to illustrate the following quattro prices
based on an average mileage for its year of manufacture, with the
Body work & Mechanics in a well cared for condition, additionally
with a full or some service history confirming current mileage
and previous ownership. It need not be a Concourse winner, but a
Car that the new purchaser can simply jump into and dove away
with no immediate bodywork or Mechanical repairs etc. to be
carried out ....

1980 - Chassis Number - AA 900.......... Left Hand Drive Model
only - 2144 cc 170 bhp with twin Headlamps, 6' Ronels fitted with
205 - 60 - 15 Tyres. There were No UK Models but some were
imported into the UK by private individuals and are now very
rare.

This era of the quattro is very difficult to value, simply due to
the fact that there are very few of these cars still in existence
and not a lot of today's potential buyers would want to buy a 16
year old quattro. However the devoted enthusiast would
unquestionably kill for one !

               Current Day Values GBP3,000 - GBP3,500

1981 - Chassis Number - BA 900.......... First available in the
UK in March 1981 in Left Hand drive only. Cost new GBP15,037.00
and would perform 0 - 60 in under 7 seconds and a top speed of
137 mph, option of 7' Fuch Alloys fitted with 205 - 55 - 15
Tyres, but with no other changes made over it's predecessor.

              Current Day Values - GBP4,000 - GBP5,000

1982 - Chassis Number - CA 900.......... Still Left Hand
Drive, with the later chassis numbers being the first of the
Right Hand drive models. No other major changes, other than
Pneumatic Differential Lock superseding the earlier Cable system.
Cost new GBP17,051.00.

              Current Day Values - GBP4,500 - GBP5,500

1983 - Chassis Number - DA 900.......... This was the
first of the of the official Right Hand Drive Models available in
the UK with the new Cibie rectangular Headlamps and the interior
seats were changed from a 3 piece to a single piece design.

It was at this stage that the quattro was a force to be reckoned
with in the World Rally Championship and the UK sales of the
quattro started to increase dramatically. -

Being the first official Right Hand Drive quattro into the UK,
this model is still very sought after by the first time quattro
owner and offers excellent value for money providing you buy a
good clean genuine example. (But be careful out there!!)

                Current Day Value GBP6,000 - GBP6,500

1984 - Chassis Number - EA 900.......... This was the year
of the revamp with a complete change of interior design and
colour including the introduction of the infamous Digital Dash
along with ABS becoming a standard feature.

Wipers changed to rest on the Left and 8' Ronals were now being
fitted with 215 - 50 - 15 Tyres. Wider rear Bumper apron was
fitted and the ride height lowered. Cost new GBP21,787.00

                Current Day Value GBP7,500 - GBP8,000

1985 - Chassis Number - FA 900.......... introduction of
rectangular sloping Headlights and Grill along with Smoked Rear
Light Lenses requiring special two-element bulbs. Colour Coded
Rear Spoiler and Boot Lid and Interior colour changed to
Charcoal.

                Current Day Value GBP8,000 - GBP8,500

1986 - Chassis Number - GA 900.......... Basically stayed
the same as the earlier model, with the exception that the
Digital Dash display now had no boost gauge and was orange
instead of green. Some of the later Chassis numbers were fitted
with the all new fibre Glass Boot Lid and hydraulic Bonnet Rams.

(Metal boot lids continued to appear erratically. JA900637, a
 1988 car, has one.)

                Current Day Value GBP8,000 - GBP8,500

1987 - Chassis Number - HA 900.......... Stayed the same the
same as the 1986 model but fitted with uprated Front Twin Pot
Callipers and larger Discs and improved rear twin brake light
clusters.

                Current Day Value GBP8500 - GBP9,000

1988 - Chassis Number - JA 900.......... and 1989 - Chassis
Number KA 900

In 1998 the all new 2226 cc MB Engine replaced the previous WR
engine - fitted with turbo cooled by oil and water, torque
sensing (TORSEN) differential, new ABS design with accelerometer.
Wastegate now controlled by inlet pressure, but ultimately
overridden by computer switching air from either end of the turbo
into plenum chamber previously open to atmosphere. Body and
interior remained the same as earlier model but now with new
chrome badging on Boot Lid.

               Current Day Value GBP11,500 - GBP12,000

1990 - Chassis Number - LA 900.......... 1990 saw the
introduction of the new 2309 cc 20 Valve 220 bhp RR engine,
fitted with Catalytic Converters and a smaller KKK Turbo, thus
reducing the inherent problems of Turbo lag.

Complete new interior - Half Leather Sports Jacquard trim, Grey
Leather covered Centre Console, Glove Box Lid and Door Glove
pockets. Audi Sports Leather covered Steering Wheel. Rear Boot
Badging was replaced with chrome Audi rings only. Cost New
GBP35.523.45 on the road ...

               Current Day Value GBP18,000 - GBP19,000

1991 Chassis Number -MA 900.......... No changes made as
Audi were now coming to the end of production.

Current Day Value GBP22,000 - GBP25,000 (subject to availability)

(We haven't covered "Sport" quattros. These are ur-quattros with
ten to twelve inches taken out of the wheelbase and around 316bhp
nominal. Audi are thought to have built 216, but many are actually
rebuilds, replicas, etc. Expect to pay GBP60,000 or so.)

No consideration has been made for the optional extras such as
Full Leather Interior and Air Conditioning as this is an
individual preference and in my opinion adds little to no
additional value to the quattro. Additionally, please note that
the valuations given in this article are based on my own personal
experience and knowledge of the quattro and today's current
market demand, and is provided to assist you in arriving at a
realistic valuation of your quattro.
