A magnetic drain plug would be easier to install, might work better and would be less expensive.
Most of the q trannies have them from the factory, but will not fit the oil pan drain plug hole.
Would be pretty easy to attach a magnet to the OEM engine oil drain plug if aftermarket ones are hard to find.....

How much of the magnetic field passes thru the (presumably) steel filter
housing?
Have you ever checked the old filter for particles?
Can you supply more info on how to get the magnet you use?
How do you keep the magnet on the filter (its own magnetism, or some
external help)?
