If we are talking about Rover's current V8, then my recollection is that that
"now famous" Rover V8 is actually a much massaged evolution of the "never
very famous" all-aluminum Buick V8 from the early '60s.

If, however, we are talking about the V8 that Rover used in the lamentable
Triumph Stag, I would suggest that the terms should be "now infamous among
those who remember it at all."  That particular 3.0L V8 is (sort of) related
to the TR7's 2.0L 4-cylinder, which in turn is related to the 4-cylinder
engine of the old Saab 99. But "famous?"  I think not.
