Using Non Premium Gas

Jerry,
I've used both 87 and 89 Octane in my A4.  I've tended to use the lower 
Octane gas(es?) while doing mainly city or suburban driving.  I have not 
noticed any difference in performance under these conditions.  However, 
I usually switch to 92 for highway driving. The few times that I did use 
89 for highway driving, I did log higher gas consumption (mileage 
decreased by about ~1mpg - don't know if the difference is statistically 
significant).

I would recommend that you use 92 when engaging in some spirited 
driving, and 87/89 while engaging in more sedentary driving.
