  You seemed to haved owned a few cars that I didn't even know were made! 
In response to your question, I suspect you knew most of the short comings
of the coupe when you bought it, I would guess you handling can be brought
up to snuff for <2K including tires, the engine work will be commensurate
with the depth of your wallet, I'm sure other owners will have suggestions.
 For me the upgrade vs buy new has always been easy.  This is why the age
of my cars averages 15yrs.  I can't swing the payments on a car I would
really like in the $35K+ area, if you can your choices are easier.
