A3: first sighting

Hi there!

Yesterday I saw my first A3 eye-to-headlight! It is indeed a great looking
car- very sexy in shape and well-proportioned. It hasn't even been
officially introduced in Holland, so I guess this sighting is due to my
living near to the Dutch Audi importer_ this has already yielded an A8
sighting before its introduction. The A3 was painted in the orangey-gold
metallic colour that's been used in press introductions so far. 'In the
flesh' it looked beautiful, in the late-afternoon sunlight. I'd like one of
these cars, but I guess I would take a more conservative colour: more
pleasing in the long term and better for resale.
BBC's Top Gear gave it a rave review last Thursday. Jeremy Clarkson, who's
notoriously hard to please, said that its dynamic qualities are 'OK' but
its looks are fantastic. According to him it's a sure bet for the European
Car of the year '97 award. Clarkson's an Audi fan BTW: I've just finished
his book 'Clarkson on cars' (a very good read) and he's got lots of nice
things to say about our favourite cars. I hope I will get an invitation for
the introduction party (as they sent me for the A4 Avant some months
ago)...

BTW- model fans: the A3 was released in 1:43 model form a couple of months
ago already. It's a very good looking model, made by Paul's Model
Art/Minichamps of Germany (who do the great A4 touring car racer as well).
It should be available here soon for about equiv. $25.

Bye,

Tom
