Sounds like a normally open switch that's not closing, the lube made it
not close even more, unplugging it = same thing.

I am taking my 5ktq to the body shop in a couple of hours and can check my
switch and send you the results and maybe a clue how to repair. I do not
have any manuals on this car yet, so you will have to tell me location and
description of the switch. I have had good luck taking audi switches apart
and burnishing the contacts. I'm in Poughkeepsie, and a local junkyard has a
half dozen mid80 5k's. I could check for you, but I'm sure most of them have
engine bays mostly complete.
