My '85 5ks, on several trips between Michigan and Massachusetts 
(taking the 401, 403, etc. through Ontario) gets somewhere close to 
500mi/tankful.  That's doing 75-80mph from Bay City to Port Huron, MI 
and 70-75mph the rest of the way.  My Haynes manual says I've got a 
21.1g tank, which sounds plausible.  Tires are 185/70R14s.  No 
Quattro, no turbo, no trip computer (though donations are accepted).
