A belated thanks to all those who responded to my original query. The general 
tone of all the responses was "Go for it!", and I did in fact make the deal 
the next day at $750 over invoice. The car itself arrived 10 days later
and I took delivery  on Sat. . 

On a negative note the Air Bag light has come on which will require a trip to 
the dealer. There is also a whistling noise which starts at ~75 MPH
on the driver side window. I can't figure out if it is a faulty window gasket
or wind noise from the side mirror. Anyone have any suggestions? 

My salesmen has just come back from Colorado , attending A8 and
A4 1.8T orientation. Naturally he was impressed with the two A8  models,
however he thought that the turbo was sucking for air climbing hills
at 11000 feet. He wanted to give them a test at sea level. He also 
showed me the invoice on one of his inbound '97 A4s. As previously 
reported the avg. car will invoice for ~$1k higher then the 96 ones.
The only changes are a new trip computer option for $250 ( I would have
gone for that!) and the ski sack is now part of the All weather package.
