Found it!! Oren and ScottyCboy called it!!!!

There are TWO switches on that rackafratzin brake pedal!!

The lower one (and the obvious one) is for the cruise control only.  
The top one (half-hidden behind steering column stuff) is the brake 
light switch.

Beleive it or not, these are NOT held in position by nuts or anything 
more authoritative than plastic bushings.  The manual does say that 
you just depress the pedal, push the switch in, then pull up on the 
pedal manually to position the switch.

Evidently - pending further failure - the top switch somehow backed 
out of the mount and the button could not be depressed by the pedal.

At least it's working for now....
