Boy, it's cold outside

Yesterday, I started my '89 100Q, and the outside temp read
about -48F. And it's only September!  It climbed back up to
the correct reading of 50F over about 2-3 minutes.  This morning
it did it again in the garage, but did *not* do it when I
stopped for 5 minutes to gas up.

Any ideas?  When it's right, it's right.
