"ZF" is a German abbreviation for "Zahnradfabrik" - literally "gear wheel 
factory".

I know that there are several around Germany, but I don't know if they are 
related.  ZF Friedrichshafen was a customer of mine, many years ago.  It might 
not be a company name, per se. I'll have a look.
