Re: 10V NA temperature info

     Chris,
Your old thermostat was stuck open. Common failure mode. Supposedly
fail safe mode. A correctly operating thermostat should maintain more
or less the same temperature indication around town and on the
highway. The low highway temp is caused by ram air cooling the
     radiator more than enough.

Hey all...

A few weeks back, I posted a question regarding the temperature gauge
reading at which the thermostat opens on the 2.3 I-5. There seemed to be
some confusion on what exactly this reading is. I changed the thermostat on
my 90 today and, to my suspicion, the old one was opening too soon; hence,
the engine was running too cold (...duh). Here is some empirical evidence
on where exactly a properly-working thermostat will maintain engine (10V NA)
temperature in relation to the gauge (with NO actual values...what's up with
that?) itself . The following depicts the gauge and the arrows denote where
the needle should roughly be:

         |||   |   !   |   |   !   |
          C H
                  ^^^^

It was nice and warm today and cooled off dramatically tonight; the same
general readings were obtained around town and on the highway. With my old
thermostat, I would get to the 'halfway' mark in traffic and barely out of
the in the 'C' area on the highway. HTH someone!
