I had a Passat with a factory-fitted Audi 2.3i engine, back in 1982-5.
At the time, the Porsche test facility at Weissach was a customer of mine, and
I drove up there quite a few times. The "Syncro" was under development at the
time, although it was known as the "Passat Tetra" right up to launch, with the
name being changed to "Syncro" right at the last minute.
I managed to get a ride (at very modest speeds) round the test track, sitting
in a single bucket seat in the rear, with the front passenger seat replaced by
instruments.
They're quite rare in Europe, too.
