Re: Tightening Crank Bolt

Ok so I've shot down the Rope-a-dope theory!

So we ask: How does one go about tightening, the crank bolt?

While spectating a Pike's Peak Hill climb one season, I was witness to a
remarkable use of ingenuity, to which I learned and use today.
One of those Group B Quattros developed a problem. The Chief Mechanic
needed to remove the crank pulley for some reason(didnt get full story)
He inserted a spare transmission mount bolt, through a hole in the side
of the tranny, lined up the flywheel, which also had a hole, the bolt
was now thru the tranny and the flywheel. Which effectively held the
crank from rotating, and two men with a four foot breaker bar, removed
the bolt.

Well at first it was a mystery to me, untill it was my turn for a timing
belt change. I used a spare tranny mount bolt, inserted thru the round
hole in the side of the tranny, lined up the flywheel, inserted the bolt
as far as it would go, and removed the crank bolt, and reinstalled with
zero problems!

Sorry, for those with automatics gear boxes! Thats probably why there is
a "special tool"
