5KS Tranny Help Needed

I have a friend (who is not on the list) who has a '85 5KS with an automatic
transmission.

A couple of weeks ago he was driving down the road and all of a sudden a lot of
white smoke could be seen in the rear view mirror (and he has not yet upgraded
to the James Bond smokescreen function).

When back at home, he concluded that it was the gearbox oil (not ATF) and it was
leaking in the vicinity of between the transmission and transfer case (this car
is a NON-quattro).

Question #1:  Does anyone know the common cause for this? Is it a seal, plug or
something else? What does it take to fix it? (that was more than one question)

Question #2:  Does anyone have an old automatic transmission/transfer case for
this car that they want to part with?
