Hello again,
Thanks for all your input on the smoking problem when starting cold. I followed your advice and did some checking. I've come to the conclusion that the turbo is OK. So that leaves me with possible leaky lifters which occasionaly are noisy when cold, worn valve guides or valve guide seals. The car does not burn oil, (relatively speaking for its mileage) (180k klms, about 110k miles) therefore I'm going to let it ride and keep an eye on it.
I think it was Phil that mention the cool down idling. This I am guilty of not observing. Only because as my car idles after a hard run the temperature goes up, the rad fan comes on, the injectors blower comes on, etc. therefore I figured if the temperature was colder when I arrived, why let it idle and raise it. At one point I asked my Audi service manager about it, and he said that this wasn't problem on my car since it has a pump that recirculates coolant thru the turbo after switching it off. Howerver, from what I hear from you guys, I will start observing the cool down period just in case.
Thanks for all your input
