When my turbo went, an early morning cloud was one of the symptoms.  Nothing 
when driving.  In my case, the impellor retaining nut had fallen off.

Thinking aloud - if the turbo bearing is shot, oil could be draining down from 
the top of the engine through the turbo bearing into the bottom of the 
impellor housing overnight.  What would happen if a non-turbo filter were 
fitted, such that the engine drained back to the sump like a non-turbo car? 
This would remove the overnight head of oil above the turbo bearing - if the 
result were no early morning cloud ...
