I'm told it is a metal laminate that is part of the new climate-control
system in the U.S. spec A8, which includes solar roof sensors that
activate fans when the car is in the sun and its interior reaches a
certain temperature.  Neither I nor my source knew if just some or all
U.S. spec new generation A6s will have the system.  My source, who
attended a three-day clinic to familiarize Audi mechanics with the new
A8, said he was told dash-mounted detectors would not work at all. 
Period.  But as you note, we may be talking about diminished function
here, perhaps not total malfunction.
