Re: '85 GT clutch UPDATE
Thanks for the responses about my GT clutch not working. I bought a
replacement slave cylinder from $50 (made by FAG, apparently) on Saturday
and installed it. Relatively straightforward job, as long as you have
the correct tools, especially the punch (thanks, Mike, for the correct
size).
Unfortunately, that did not fix the problem. I can still push in the
clutch pedal but the car will not go into gear (i.e. the clutch is not
releasing). My next move is to test the master cylinder. I rebuilt it
about 4 months ago, so maybe the rebuild did not take. To test it,
I plan on blocking the cylinder output with a brass plug, and applying
pressure to the clutch pedal. If the master cylinder is ok, the pedal
should not go down. If it does, then the seal is blown and I'll
probably need to replace the cylinder. Does this test sound viable?
The idea just hit me last night, so I don't know how valid it is (I'm
not mechanically inclined, I just pretend to be). :)
If this doesn't work, then I guess I will have to take the car in to
a shop, possibly for a clutch job. I thought that the clutch would have
made a noise if something broke internally. Maybe not, though.
I priced the disc, pressure plate, & release bearing from an old IPC
catalog at ~$250 for the group. Has anyone recently replaced their
clutch, and is this reasonable?
Thanks,
Eric
