Don't bother with anything that's not full power (5 Watts on AM) and 40 channels, they are not that much more money. Hand-helds are OK, but you will still need an external antenna.

i've been wondering about the usefullness of a cb for a while. perusing the
new radio shack flier (w/apologies to igor ;-) ) i see they have some
inexpensive hand helds: $20 for one channel/100 mW, $50 for three (?)
channel, 300 mW. are these useful or is a full-power unit required for
reasonable success? following the inverse square law, what range could be
expected from a 100 mW unit? igor, shortwave experts...
