What I usually do is set up a vice with the jaws slightly wider than
the driveshaft. Then I wedge a screwdriver (of appropriate blade
width) in the circlip, holding it open. Then I put the driveshaft
(with the outer CV joint at the top) between the jaws of the vice
(which is not tightened), and holding the driveshaft (and the
screwdriver) pound the CV joint down onto the vice repeatedly. You
need to use a surprising amount of force for a couple of minutes to
 achieve success.

Good luck.
