'85 GT clutch latest update
The latest scoop on my car is....it works kinda-sorta.
After replacing the slave cylinder, to no avail, I ordered a master cylinder
from IPC for $80 (ATE, identical to the one taken out of the car).
I installed the new MC last night and bled the system, but the car still
wouldn't go into gear.
So, I pulled the slave out, made sure it would move in/out (as suggested
by a fellow list member :), put it back in, and bled the system. Tried
to put the car in gear again, but again I failed.
So, I got really pissed at the car and jammed it towards 3rd gear (with
the clutch in, of course!). With great effort, it went into gear!
Surprised, I pulled it out of third (with a bit of effort) and began
shoving it into the other gears, cycling the cluch in between. After
a few moments, it was working, although not very well. The gears were
a little difficult to get into and out of. When I drove it around,
it started having the problems sporadically. Sometimes it was very hard
to get into gear, and sometimes it would feel 'stuck' in gear when I
pushed the clutch in (i.e. the engine would still move the car). I drove
it this morning and it didn't exhibit any of these symptoms, but it was
a bit notchier (is that a word?) than usual. Also, the clutch engages
in the middle of the pedal travel when I change gears, so it seems that
the clutch is opening fully.
Does anyone have any ideas? Could something have been stuck in my
tranny, that would not allow the synchros to function properly? I changed
to Valvoline synthetic gear oil just a few months ago, so I wouldn't
imagine the tranny is low on oil (although I will check on that).
I don't want to consider the possible wild goose chase I went on and
spent $175 replacing things that didn't need it. At least I won't have
to worry about the clutch hydraulic mechanism failing anytime soon.
We must love this pain, that is why we put up with it...
