Assuming this is the same as my '85 Coupe, I'll give it a shot.
The wire has a long side and a short side, relative to the ~90 degree
bend. The short side goes through the slave cylinder pin. The longer
side goes back along the top of transmission towards the back of the
car, under the hydraulic hose going into the slave cylinder. I had to
rotate the slave cylinder to get the wire to fit under the hose, and
it seems to apply some small amount of pressure on the host now that
it is installed. Maybe this keeps the slave from rotating around in
the tranny. (??)
You could probably replace it with a bolt and nut, although it would
be a pain to put in and remove with the tranny in the car, I think.
Actually, I didn't really understand how that wire keeps the pin
in the tranny. It looks like it could just slide out the other side,
if it really wanted to.
