BMW X series, at the time when they were imported to US, had a viscous 
slip center differential. Diff locks came as options I believe for both 
front and rear...
MB 4-matic all-wheel drive only operates in 1st gear.

The new BMW X series (not in US yet) have the latest Quattro system the 
last time I've heard. 
I'm not really familiar with the developments of all-wheel drive MBs MB.

Correct me if my info is out of date.
