Re: Speed traps
Well, a friend of mine has a black '87 5kTQ with the K40 Sonaradar installe
d in it. He bought it with it in it, and it was VERY stealthy the way it was
hidden. The detector unit (the piece you would have in the interior and want t
o hide) was mounted in the glovebox, right up against the piece that sits in th
e vertically. Fits perfectly up agains there, and does not get in the way. Th
en, there was a toggle switch to turn it on and off in the cluster of dummy swi
tches in the center dash piece. Then, one of the blank idiot gauges (lights)
became the waning light for the detector along with a small speaker for it hidd
en under the dash. When the detector went off, you'd hear it go off, and one o
f the idiot lights in the instrument cluster labeled "RADAR" started flashing!
The actual radar unit was mounted somewhere in the engine compartment...near th
e lower grille (hidden away)...you'd really have to look hard to find it.
Well, it was really cool, but he stopped using it because it was kinda outd
ated and did not work as well as the Bel 635XTi he had (which is a piece of cra
p IMHO). Also, the Bel was stealth. Anyways, I was at a car audio shop and I
noticed that they caried the K40 detectors. When I talked to the guy, he told
me that they just updated the Sonaradar, and it is now wideband plus laser! I
don't remember if it was stealth or not though, but as Mike pointed out, they'd
have a hell of a time finding it if they pulled you over for having a detector.
Anyways, I just thought I'd let y'all know about this. I picked up a brochure
on it. Also, the new K40 Sonaradar is no bigger than the old one, and looks ex
actly the same (I wouldn't have noticed they changed it). Also, reading the br
ochure, K40's are garunteed against tickets for a year. If you get a ticket,
they will pay it for you! That sounds like a pretty good deal!
