In VW and Porsche mag... when it was called that, had a comparo with the
88 90, 90 quattro, 325i and 325ix. I havent seen the article in years,
but here is what I remember.
The 4 cars were tested in several areas on ice...
Standing start
Uphill climbing
and a roadcourse. 
The rear drive bmw was a wash. The 90 NON quattro was favored on the
driving section, because of the ability to throw the rear around and the
90 front driver did the best on the hillclimb (in reverse).

The summary: If you want Camaro rear-drive get the IX. If you want all
around stability, quattro. (duh)

The 4 matic MB is a rear drive car until it detects slip... too late. It
changes the dynamics of the car while in a difficult traction situation.
(At least the ad for the 1990 V8 says so)
