Neil,
	I'm not sure if this means anything or helps (Probably not) But My 1996 
10V Ur Quattro (Mechanical Type Fuel Injection) has a Hitachi ECU that 
could only be "chipped" be swapping the ECU with a "Chipped" one, where 
as My 1990 20V Ur Quattro (Electronic Fuel Injection) has a Bosch ECU 
that can be "Chipped"  (Very Successfully I might add) by unplugging one 
EPROM (chip) and plugging another one in.
