VR6 vs Audi6 and Passat(A4) engine choices

FYI, no, the VW VR6 has little in common with the Audi V6 other
than its displacement (2.8l) and its horsepower (172).
The Audi V6 is a "typical" 90?deg V6 rather than the
VWs 15deg layout.

However, I haven't heard of plans to install the VR6 in the
Passat. Rumour has it *no* future VWs will have the VR6,
I've heard the "rights" have been sold do Mercedes.
I believe the engine options are as follows:
- (150hp) 1.8 20v T 4cyl (Audi engine, same as A4)
- (160-ish hp) 2.5 10v 5 cyl VR5 (VW VR6 w/1cyl lopped off)
- (172hp) 2.8l 12v 6cyl (Audi engine, same as a4)
- (193hp) 2.8l 30v 6cyl (Audi engine, same as a4)
- some goofy TDI

Transmissions: 5spd manual, 5spd automatic, ?spd Tiptronic

Also, I believe that the Passat will not come with the
"Quattro" system for 4wd, but rather with the simpler
"Syncro" system.

Is the narrow-angle VW VR6 the same engine as in the Audi though? If
they're different, how?

The Passat is about $6K less expensive fully-loaded than an equivalent
A4
(without quattro). I'm curious if the cost is entirely the four-ring
logo,
better service, better suspension, and optional quattro.
