a quick trick to check if the static is coming from the high voltage system
is to open the hood with the engine running in a dark garage or in the dark
outside. i know that in a big city it's hard to find a dark area but here in
the middle of nowhere it can be blacker than soot in a tunnel, and any
corona or arcing is easily visible. hope this helps.
