A simpler way of thinking about bandwidth is a pipe.
You have a pipe of a certain size that will only allow
a certain volume of fluid to pass through (let's say beer!)
By occupying space (or bandwidth) with useless things (let's
say cough syrup) there is less room for the useful beer.
Hope that helps the non-techies.  Made me thirsty for a 
Franziskaner Weissbier (sp?) :)
