Being trendy (German-style) both VW and Audi used the "E" to mean "economy".
At one point in Germany, the Golf "E" had a push switch on the end of the wiper
control stalk that shut off the engine. Pressing the accelerator with the
clutch depressed automatically restarted it. "E" cars had extra-long top
gears, etc.
OTOH - "E" _is_ short for "Einspritz" - the root of various German words that
are associated with injection. But, in Germany, they tend to use "i" for that
purpose. Again, by their own standards, being trendy.
