most of the state motor vehicle codes are (or were) written so that aux         
lighting must be wired such that they are switched on with the headlights.      
it was also written that it is illegal to run with marker lights only           
(no headlights) - a law that was rarely if ever enforced.                       
this was before DRLS became mandatory - go figure...

ps - some states now require headlights on if your wipers are on.
