Coupe/Quattro trunk lid opening switch failed

I have a 1984 Audi Coupe GT.  I went to open the trunk today, and noticed 
 the lever did not release the trunk latch.  Can anyone give me some 
clues as to what might be involved in opening the trunk and what I need 
to do to fix the latch release?
