headlights and distance
several years ago we were travelling between towns at night in the boonie
blackness using my wifes grocery vehicle a 1200cc lada with a sporty new
paint job. a member of the dudley do good constabularly mistook us old
geezers for brash youths in a turbo super duper car. he was travelling the
opposite direction when he determined all of this in the dark with his
highly honed instincts and obvious professional superiority. at some point
behind us, he slowed, made a u turn on a two laner and chased us down. we,
unaware of the drama behind us, put putted along on our merry way. as we
approached a small town i commented that some idiot was driving like an
idiot behind us and he appeared to be taking air over small rises as he
approached. at this point i sped up a bit because we were within a 1/4 mile
of a four lane stretch which would give the rapidly closing idiot ample time
to pass. but he refused to pass and burned the backs of our heads with his
lights. as soon as i hit the 4 lane stretch i pulled over and stopped. at
this point dudley do good turned on his flashing lights and issued us <me> a
ticket for speeding.
some time later i went to court and dudley do good showed up and
told how i had had the temerity to speed in his enforcement zone etc etc.
after he finished his biased and erroneous tirade, i had the opportunity to
ask him some questions. i asked him at what speed he had chased me down, and
he replied that he didn't know. i then asked if it was over 160kph <100mph>
and he responded yes. i asked whether he considered it dangerous to drive at
that speed on an 80km limit stretch of highway with no flashing lights on to
warn oncoming vehicles of his speed, in case they decided to pass and use
his lane unaware of his fast approach due to the twisty road. <thread
content>. at this point the judge pointed out that i was on trial and not
dudley do good. i got off with a warning. he was a fool.
