Well, if the body and interior are in good shape. And you want to keep
costs down, I'd do an engine swap. Stay away from the 2.0L motors since
they have a high (10:1) compression and you will need a newer engine
management system. My recommendation is to find a good 83 or 84 GTI
engine. I'm not sure of any problems you may encounter hooking up to an
auto trans. Do keep your exhaust manifold, you will need it. You may
want to keep your Intake manifold as well.  If you want a quick and
cheap power boost, even on your 74hp 1.715 motor, then run, don't walk
to your nearest VW salvage yard and purchase the Air sensor from a 78
or 79 rabbit with FI, A newer one will work too (like the one from the
GTI) but you may have to pay more. I paid $15 for my first one and my
VW mechanic just gave me one for my sons '81 4000. Reason; your air
sensor plate is 60mm in dia. the one you want is 80mm. And yes it makes
a Big Noticeable difference. ~8hp. Make sure it is adjusted correctly.
