Ron,

I just spent the weekend doing this on my wife's '88 5ks.  I bought the tool 
#2069 "damper wrench" from Zelenda Tools (Ivana) 800-221-0126 for ~$35. 
     I took today off to do the rears.  Just got back from the machine shop 
who compressed the springs and replaced the shocks for $35.   Total $70 + my 
labor at $0.35/hr.

When I'm all done (also upgraded to 15" wheels & 205/60 tires, new rotors/MM 
pads), I'll write up some time-saving tips and do's and don'ts.   BTW, it 
only takes about 1 hr per side, maybe 30mins if you work fast.
