On my 87 5000s, I cut down some of the plastic sleeve of the shift boot
assembly and then removed some material from the inside of the factory
shift knob. The shift knob was then screwed further down on the shift
column to shorten the lever at the shift knob end. Shef Corey tried my
shifter and said it shortened the shift about the same as his. I didn't
measure how much lower my shift knob is.
The mod is free. Just labor time. (Till someone manages to break something).
I just have the most problem with 2nd gear. My elbows hits the seat-back
bolster waaaay before the gear lever is properly slotted into position.
Maybe Audi wanted such loooooonnnnnggg shifts so that there's less chance
of someone speed shifting and munging up the syncros. (Why are you all
looking at me . . .)
