I may have a clue for you. A friend of mine had the same problem with an '86
325. The trunk (or boot for you British enthusiasts) hinges were spot welded
to the bottom of the rain gutter which runs around the inside perimeter of
the trunk, where the trunk meets the body. One of the spot welds had rusted
through, so when rain was channelled into the rain gutter, it all dripped
down into his trunk. Hope this helps!
